Joiner/ Carpenter
Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden structures, fittings and furniture.
Day-to-day Tasks
- talk about plans with clients or managers: discuss what needs to be done and get instructions
- cut and shape timber: make wood pieces for things like floors, doors, and window frames
- create and install structures: build and put in things like stairs, door frames, roof beams, and walls
- put together furniture: assemble both built-in and freestanding furniture
- install kitchens and shelves: set up kitchens, cupboards, and shelving
- make supports for wet concrete: build wooden supports (shuttering) to hold concrete in place until it dries
- design and set up interiors: create and install interiors for various places like shops, bars, offices, and more
- build stage sets for theatre: construct the scenes and backgrounds used in theatre performances

Industry Qualifications
If you want to be a Joiner/Carpenter, you may want to consider a trainee role at a company that does carpentry.
- Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery
- Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry
- T Level in On Site Construction
