Phlebotomists

Phlebotomists collect blood samples from patients, and send them off for analysis and testing.

Day-to-day tasks

As a phlebotomist, you could:

  • explain the procedure to patients and reassure them
  • insert a hypodermic needle to draw off the blood into a tube
  • apply dressings
  • label and deliver the blood sample
  • complete records and enter data on a computer

Skills and knowledge

You'll need:

  • customer service skills
  • to be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • the ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure
  • sensitivity and understanding
  • patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • the ability to work well with others
  • knowledge of English language
  • a desire to help people
  • to be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device

Industry Qualifications

There are no set entry requirements to become a trainee phlebotomist, although it may help to have a college qualification like:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Support Services
  • Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care
  • Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support

Level 2 or 3 courses in health and social care often include work placements. This will give you practical experience, which could help you to get a job afterwards.
