Roofer
Roofers re-slate and tile roofs, fit skylight windows and replace lead sheeting and cladding.
Day-to-day Tasks
- fix or replace broken tiles or slates: remove or repair them - it's called stripping
- look at roof timbers: check if they're still in good shape
- measure the roof: find out how big it is to know how much material is needed
- add insulation: make sure the roof keeps things warm or cool
- cut and add roofing felt: put on a layer to protect the roof
- cover roofs: use slates, tiles, sheets, or cladding to make sure it's safe
- add waterproof layers: put special membranes on flat roofs to keep water out
- fit plastic or lead 'flashings': put them around chimneys, windows, and walls
- seal joints with mortar: close up spaces with a special kind of material

Industry Qualifications
If you want to be a plasterer, you can start in a trainee position at a company that provides roofing services.
To go on any construction site on the Isle of Man you are required to hold a Construction IOM Accreditation Card.
