Barber
Barbering can be such a rewarding profession both creatively and financially. Barbering is continuously growing as an industry and has gained popularity as a profession.
Day-to-day duties
- welcome customers and find out what they want
- give advice on hairstyles and grooming
- cut and style hair
- shave, trim and shape beards and moustaches
- provide scalp, face and neck massages
- clean and sterilise equipment, like combs, razors and clippers
- take payments, keep records and make appointments
- keep up to date with new styles and techniques
Skills and knowledge

- a willingness to learn new techniques
- an awareness of health and safety issues and a willingness to learn more
Industry qualifications
There are a range of private courses offered for beginners. You can complete an intensive 9 – 12 week course which should enable you to gain an NVQ qualification and also cut hair competently in a professional setting.
This will require you to study off the Island and to find accommodation for the 9 – 12 week period. There is no requirement to be already working in hairdressing.
College Course (12 months)
UCM have recently introduced Level 2 Certificate in Barbering, which is a one-year course. To qualify you must already be working as a trainee hairdresser www.ucm.ac.im
