Architect

Architects design new buildings and the spaces around them, and work on the restoration and conservation of existing buildings.

Day-to-day Tasks

  • draw plans and models: use special computer programs to draw pictures and make 3D models of buildings.
  • plan and follow the rules: make a plan for a building that follows the laws and safety rules and stays within the budget.
  • oversee building work: manage construction projects, pick materials, and visit building sites to ensure everything goes well.
  • write reports and proposals: write down what you're doing and make plans for building permission.
  • talk and share ideas: chat with clients (people who want buildings), other architects, and technicians to exchange ideas and information.

Industry Qualifications

If you want to be an architect, you usually start by studying architecture at university. Afterwards, you work and learn on the job to get hands-on experience.

To officially be an architect, you need to pass a test called the Architect Registration Examination. Joining groups like the Royal Institute of British Architects can also be helpful, and it's essential to keep learning new things throughout your career.
