The role involves listening without judgment to calls from people who are in varying degrees of distress. Calls may contain difficult subject matter and unfortunately, around 1 in 5 of our callers will be feeling suicidal.
The qualities we are seeking in our volunteers include being open-minded, empathetic, supportive, discreet, accepting and honest. If you express an interest there would be an initial interview so that we can find out about each other. If you meet our criteria and decide you would like to become a volunteer, comprehensive training is provided. It takes around six months to become a fully-fledged Samaritan and because the training is extensive and our resources are finite, we are keen to offer training to people who hope to be an active Samaritan for some time. The recommended commitment is a three-hour shift each week. We also welcome people who may not want to talk to our callers but who have other skills to offer, for example administration, marketing or IT.
Various shifts from 15:00 – 08:00 any day
